  • We report on diagnostic biopsies (core, punch, shave, currettings and excisions) and regional or organ resection specimens
  • Specimens must be submitted in 10% formaldehyde (formalin)
  • Turnaround time is 24 hours or less unless additional tissue fixation is required or if specimen must be decalcified

Frozen sections are an important diagnostic adjunct. We provide a frozen section service at the laboratory and plan to provide a similar mobile service in the near future. Please contact the laboratory for any queries.

We offer both Liquid Based Cytology (LBC) and conventional Pap smear screening. We use the SurePath (BD) LBC system. LBC samples must be submitted in SurePath vials available from the laboratory. Appropriate consumables are also supplied by us. A rapid turnaround time is guaranteed.

We offer high risk HPV (Human papillomavirus) testing. Tests are done on the SurePath vial at the time of initial reporting or as a reflex test once the result has been reviewed by the referring clinician. All vials are kept for a minimum of 4 weeks after the result has been issued. Please contact the laboratory if HPV testing or sub-typing is required.

This includes examination and reporting of:

  • Smears and imprints (touch preparations) from mucosal and cutaneous surfaces other than the cervix
  • Exfoliative cytology which includes examination of fluids including urine, sputum, CSF, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid and ascitic fluid
  • Fine needle aspirates from thyroid, salivary glands, breast, liver and tumours

Consumables including slides, cytology fixative media and slide holders are available from the laboratory.

We provide immunofluorescence services for skin and renal biopsy specimens. Specimens must be submitted in Mitchell’s medium which is provided by the laboratory. Please contact the laboratory to arrange collections as specimens need to be refrigerated for optimum immunofluorescence results. Guidelines are also available regarding the optimum sampling sites for immunofluorescence samples.
